by Michael Wells CBC continues in the neutropenic range with his white blood count at 0.3. While Brady needed a blood transfusion yesterday and will be getting more platelets today; we are very pleased with the results of this slow recovery of his system. The logic is simple; the slower the recovery, the slow the growth of his cancer. This is why I drive the nurses crazy with my need for the morning CBC numbers. While I’m sure the aggressiveness of Brady’s leukemia is determined by many other factors, the slow recovery of his white blood count keeps me going. On to the good stuff; Brady had a great Monday. One of my co-workers, Anna and her husband Pete surprised us with a visit. They brought Brady an Elmo video some yummy cupcakes. It was really very nice of them. Brady continues to amaze me as he is truly a very bright child. His latest stunt was telling his Grandpa the 3 different works he knows for trash, (trash, garbage, and rubbish) not once but twice as Grandpa couldn’t remember the word rubbish. It was just adorable see him help his Papa. Brady also instructs you as to which oral medicine he wants by telling you its color. Normally, his first choice is pink. Finally, he is now telling us where he wants to walk and it seems he has developed a fondness for picking the Black-Eye-Susan flowers in front of the hospital. Sherrie and I are pleased with our decision to stay in the hospital as we would have had to return twice so Brady could receive his platelets and blood transfusions. It was the correct decision, while we continue to wait and see how Brady responds to being weaned off steroids. So far, everything is going OK and within the next 7-10 days we will have our answer regarding the Donor Lymphocyte Transfusion and what our next path will be. I am so convinced Brady is going to beat this horrific disease and I am equally convinced all the prayers, good thoughts and hugs dedicated to him is a leading factor in his success. Please, please continue to help our son with your good thoughts, abundant hugs and amazing prayers – they are working a miracle.“8 Years Later—Still No Cure for Pediatric Cancer” is a series of posts revisiting the journal kept by Sherrie and Michael Wells during the cancer diagnosis and treatment of their son, Brady Michael. Hopefully these entires will provide an understanding of the journey families face when dealing with these horrific diseases and of the important work the Hugs for Brady Foundation does.
