by Michael Wells We have some terrible news to share; our wonderful son Brady has been diagnosed with Leukemia. We don’t yet know the exact type of Leukemia but we do know it is treatable and most importantly can be completely cured 80-90% of the time. Brady is resting in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology section of The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Brady was admitted to the hospital a week ago for what we believed was a bacterial infection and after 6 days of x-rays, blood work, sonograms, CAT scans, lumbar puncture, and bone marrow biopsy he is doing rather well. His doctor Richard Drachtman is planning to start his chemotherapy hopefully tomorrow and is telling us Brady will be home in the next 10-14 days. Brady will then begin the rather arduous task of outpatient chemotherapy for the next 30 months. Sherrie and I are remaining extremely positive that Brady is going to come through this completely cured and that he will live a long and happy life. Please take a moment to remember Brady in your thoughts and prayers he going to need all the help and positive thoughts he can get“8 Years Later—Still No Cure for Pediatric Cancer” is a series of posts revisiting the journal kept by Sherrie and Michael Wells during the cancer diagnosis and treatment of their son, Brady Michael. Hopefully these entires will provide an understanding of the journey families face when dealing with these horrific diseases and of the important work the Hugs for Brady Foundation does.
