by Michael Wells Brady continues to be about as adorable as any 23 month old toddler. Thursday, he (when awake) was in truly great spirits. He directed us to take him for a walk which turned out to be about 3 times as long as our normal one as he did not want to go back into the house. It isn’t that he whined or as Sherrie would say, “pitched a fit” he just would say over and over “more” along with signing the word “more” with his little hands it was impossible to say “no” to him. Later on, he insisted on going for a “ride” in the car and I think I must have driven about 50 miles before he finally fell asleep and we could return home. Yesterday was also a very hectic day around our home as we had several people stopping by throughout the day. Sherrie’s family minister and life long friend Reverend Maltby stopped in to say hell-o, Aunt Ellen Gambatese stopped in to see Brady, Kris from Kiddie Academy stopped in to give Brady a book, and Donna Plaxe stopped by around 8:00 pm to show us how to give Brady various medications intravenously. All and all it was a very busy day at the Wells household. Brady slept through must of the coming and goings but when finally woke up around 9:00pm he wanted to play with Mama & Dada, as well as go for another car ride and finally somewhere around 11:00pm feel back asleep. However, he only slept for about 3 hours and hence that why I am writing at 2:30 in the morning. While Brady had what we are now considering a “good” day, he is still spiking high temperatures (we remove the thermometer after 103˚) and it appears he has cellulites developing in both his eyes. He looks like he did when this whole nightmare began over 9 months ago. The only difference is now both his eyes are almost swollen shut and are bruised much like a prize fighter who has taken one too many punches. It’s deja-vu all over again! Nurse Practitioner Donna believes his eyes are cancer cells and will most likely continue to cause havoc. We were also told “this is all part of where Brady’s cancer is at.” I swear if you ever want to experience pure evil, spend some time with a baby who has terminal cancer. This disease is just so vicious! Well, I going to call it a night and let Sherrie get some sleep; I’ll take the “point” in our family room while she tries to rest. Tomorrow Brady is back at the outpatient clinic for a platelet transfusion and hopefully it doesn’t take all day. Until tomorrow, please pray that Brady has another peaceful day.“8 Years Later—Still No Cure for Pediatric Cancer” is a series of posts revisiting the journal kept by Sherrie and Michael Wells during the cancer diagnosis and treatment of their son, Brady Michael. Hopefully these entires will provide an understanding of the journey families face when dealing with these horrific diseases and of the important work the Hugs for Brady Foundation does.
