Thomas Morris
Tom was raised in Leonia, NJ and was the youngest of seven children. From an early age he spent a great deal of time on the playgrounds and in the recreation center. Children and sports were an important part of Tom’s life and during his high school years he was a volunteer coach for many different athletic teams. This interest led him to Montclair State University where he pursued a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Upon graduation, a Program Coordinator position opened up in the Leonia Recreation Department. This is where his 34-year career began.
Tom has been employed by the Township of South Brunswick for the past 27 years as the Director of Parks and Recreation. In this role he works with the entire community in many different capacities. The Parks and Recreation Department manages 30 park areas, recreation programming, special events, athletic leagues, programming for children and adults with special needs and has a very active relationship with many non-profits in the community and region.
Tom had the opportunity to meet Mike and Sherrie Wells a number of years ago at a Parks and Recreation Board meeting. They had some concerns regarding use of open space near their home.
At that time he realized what nice and caring individuals they both were. As we all know the Wells family went through an unthinkable tragedy and like many in the community Tom wanted to help. He was fortunate enough to become part of the group that established the Hugs for Brady Twilight 5K and Kids Fun Run! This has been an important event and something that he will cherish and enthusiastically participate in for as long as this event is held.
Tom and his wife Andrea reside in East Windsor, NJ. They have four children and two grandchildren. He graciously accepts this award and is humbled by the recognition.
He would also like to congratulate co-award winners Jodi Brywka and Dave Brockman.
